How to eat well on a budget.

As I have mentioned (like a million times...) before Greg and I am on a pretty tight budget these days.

It has made our newly-wedness pretty cool though! We have dinner together almost every night, we are definitely wasting less and enjoying more creative meals. I try to use up every last veggie and pasta sauce  remnant in our fridge before I even think of going grocery shopping.

I am usually surprised at the "stone soup" I come up with, after thinking for an hour "There is nothing in the cupboards!!"

I try to come at it systematically. I will sit down my cookbook and puruse the pages (it's torture really...haha) and think about all the things I wish we could make...and then settle on the practical and creative dishes instead. I try to make "American" food only about 1-2 nights a week and make ethnic or fusion food the other nights. This spices things up a bit without breaking the bank, as Asian and Indian/Pakistani markets usually have cheap specialty foods.

My personal fav go to cookbook is The Joy of Cooking. I know it is old school but it seriously has EVERY kind of food imaginable.

Some things I have learned.

Eating on a budget does not mean you have to eat unhealthy. I know those snack foods and processed meats and cheeses are more expensive than the organic natural ones, but shop around!

*Go to your local farmer's market and shop the smaller veggie and fruit stands, they usually have lower prices. Also there are a lot of farms around Sonoma County that have veggies for sale that are cheaper than in the grocery store. You can even go to some local farms and pick your own veggies for super cheap! A little manual labor never killed anyone. ; )

*Spend time finding food that are rich in nutrients and fiber that will fill you up more than calorie and fat packed snacks. While it will initially seem more expensive it will fill out up more and be an actual meal where as you could be spending twice as much on "cheap snacks" that in actuality you are eating BETWEEN meals anyway!

My sideways shopping list.

*Plan meals ahead of time and don't change your mind in the middle of the grocery store. This means making a list and NOT straying from it at the store. Go in there with a determination of steel and don't add this and that last minute, because most likely it will be a whim purchase will sit in the cupboard or rot in the fridge and never get used.

*Buy things that can be used for multiple meals. For example, meat can be expensive, but buying a slightly larger cut of meat that can be used for multiple meals will be cheaper than buying individual smaller (and cheaper) cuts of meat. Plan two (or 3 or 4...) completely different meals with the same kind of meat and it will be creative, and cost effective.

for example: Chicken enchiladas and Chicken Curry. 2 different continents 1 kind of meat. Boom. Roasted.

*There are a million and one ways to dress up white rice and plain Quinoa. Fact. Utilize spices that are in your cupboard already to dress up rice, which is very cheap to buy. Again, use it multiple times a week. One night it is dressed up with butter and ground pepper, another night it is cooked in tomato sauce for a mexican meals, cook it in a little vegetable oil and steam all those rando veggies you have lurching in your fridge and bam you have fried rice!

*Do NOT be fooled by big box stores! While Costco is AMAZING...know what you are getting and if you are really getting a discount. Crappy Coscto paper towels are not cheaper than crappy Target paper towels. But a pack of Brawny paper towels are definitely cheaper at Costco, so know if you just need to get as cheap as possible or if you want cheaper name brands.
Also determine the need for bigger quantities by the size of your family (duh...right?). The big crates of perishables are not practical for a family of two, but loading up on canned foods and household items can ultimately save us money.

Hope this helps! Keep on keepin' on sisters! And budget the heck out of that grocery list...it's kind of fun...no?

A night on the town

I live in Sonoma County, about 45 minutes from San Francisco, but I hardly ever venture into the "big city". Last Greg's roommate took us out to dinner and then we hit up an old fashion 1920's saloon before heading home. It was so much fun!

If you are ever searching for a place in San Francisco to go for drinks, this place is worth checking out!
It's on the corner of Columbus and Pacific in San Fran

It had beautiful dark wood tables, a pretty small place, but they open up another room for busier nights, we just happened to go on a Monday night.

The decor was a style that I absolutely love! Apothecary bottles lined the huge hutch, which was the focal point of the bar. That upstairs room had a live Jazz singer who had a beautiful, soaring voice. Even the bathrooms had 1920's style medicine bags that held the extra toilet paper.

My cute date...swoon.

Love.

A clean home is a happy home!

Hello readers! Today I want to share with you something that is dear, but not so near my heart. : )

I love the feeling of a clean home. I love walking in the door and being at ease knowing the house is clean...it makes me tense to walk into a dirty house. Maybe because I grew up with an obsessively clean father who banned all sponges, threw away every scrap of important homework, legal documents, bills clutter in the whole house, and scrubbed the house including the toilets and windowsills before we could even THINK of leaving on vacation.

**Flashback to sitting in the car waiting for dad to finished washing the base boards so we could leave for Disneyland**

That being said it is hard for me to motivate myself to clean. When the task seems overwhelming I would rather run away from the mess than tackle it. It makes a very stressed out person out of me. As I mentioned in previous post it is hard for me to clean and organize with out clear guidelines and tools. I am going to share my "Cleaning Agenda" with you in hope that it will inspire you to get into the habit of having a clean home whether or not company is coming over...come on folks I know we all do it! : )
First of all credit where credit is due I got my cleaning agenda from the wonderful Mrs. Flylady, and adapted it for my needs. Like I have no children so doing laundry once a week suits me just fine!

Monday
  1. Change linens (I try to do this every OTHER monday)
  2. Do laundry
  3. Vacuum every room
  4. Sweep + mop bathroom(s) and kitchen
  5. Clean all windows, mirrors, and doors
Tuesday
  1. Water plants
  2. Clean stove top and oven
  3. Dust
Wednesday
  1. Empty all trashcans (like I said, adapted to my life...my trash gets picked up on Wednesdays)
  2. Clean out fridge/cupboards
  3. Write thank you cards, letters, emails, etc.
  4. Work on weekly menus and shopping lists
Thursday
  1. Errand day!
  2. Check to bank (every other week)
  3. Target run, Trader Joes and Safeway shopping
  4. Deep clean house. 15-20 minute clean in each room if needed. Or sometimes I focus on deep cleaning one room each week and do the daily 5 minute clean of each room.
Friday
  1. Check car fluids( once a month)
  2. Clean out car
 Tired yet?!
Daily
  1. Make bed as soon as you get up
  2. 5 minute "mini clean" of each room.
  3. Stay on top of dishes by washing as you go and filling the dishwasher slowly over the whole day or few days to a) have a place to put those dirty dishes you don't want to wash and b) save water by not running it everytime you have a meal.
  4. Don't go to bed until all sinks are empty and shiny!
This list of course is not exhaustive, there are different needs for different families. But I hope this is a good generic guide for you to go off of to jump start cleaning habits! I slip up, and actually need to be better about following my own advice!  A clean home is a happy home, and a happy home means a happy momma and wife! : )

What are your cleaning routines or strategies?

DIY window pane re-purpose

I am in the process of re-purposing an old window pane into a piece that is going to hang in either my living room or kitchen, I am not sure where yet.

I have some ideas on what to turn it in to but right now I am leaning towards making it into a bulletin/picture board of sorts.

 1-2-3 Primer is the best.

Here is a tip for you. When you are done painting for the day and want a clean and fresh brush to start with the next day, wash your brush out thoroughly with warm water, wrap it in a paper towel and leave it in the fridge. It won't stiffen and ready for the next use with no caked on paint!

Love, Sav
